Methods don’t live in a vacuum.
Design methods can facilitate integrating knowledge across disciplinary and professional expertise, but there is no universal formula for applying them in transdisciplinary collaboration. Much can be learned from the experiences of those who use them. For this, we are building an online archive of Method Stories and a growing
community of transdisciplinary researchers. These stories highlight both the creative breakthroughs and challenges of applying design methods in practice. Explore our collection of method stories to gain deeper insights and to apply design methods effectively in your own collaborations. Have a story to share? We’d love to hear from you!
Telling Stories to understand design methods
Stories are open for interpretation. People take out different messages from a story. Just like how we imagine that you’d be inspired by different aspects of using a design method.
Stories are shaped by their audience. A story told to adults might be adapted to engage children, while a quick bedtime story can stretch into a long tale around a campfire. In the same way, you will adopt and adapt design methods to fit the needs of your own audience in a project.
Stories serve as bridges between the past and the present, ensuring that their messages and wisdom are never lost. In the same way, methods travel across audiences and time, preserving a core essence, that help young listeners learn from the experiences of others.

Creative facilitation for technical innovation
When Carolina Martellotto joined a multidisciplinary project team, she was stepping into a group that had already been working on a complex technical product for two and a half years. The team had diverse expertise, but now they were stuck on an engineering challenge. With a new perspective and a collaborative spirit, Carolina organized a series of 2-3 day sessions designed to stimulate new ways of thinking. She guided the team towards creative freedom, balancing when to loosen the rules to invite imagination and when to bring focus back to technical constraints.
